Theft, Traffic Accidents and Drug Cases Dominate Maldives Police Records in 2026

Theft, traffic accidents and drug-related cases account for the largest share of cases recorded by the Maldives Police Service so far in 2026, according to the latest crime statistics published by the police.

Data on the Maldives Police Service’s official crime statistics portal shows 8,131 cases across the categories listed for 2026. The figures are sourced directly from the police case reporting platform.

Theft is the largest category, with 2,226 cases, representing 27.4 per cent of the recorded cases. Traffic accidents follow with 1,962 cases, or 24.1 per cent, while 1,752 drug-related cases account for another 21.5 per cent.

Together, these three categories make up more than seven in every 10 cases recorded in the statistics, highlighting theft, road safety and drug-related offences as major areas reflected in police reports this year.

The statistics also show 661 reports of lost items, making up 8.1 per cent of cases. This is followed by 424 assault cases and 415 vandalism cases, accounting for 5.2 per cent and 5.1 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, the police recorded 212 domestic violence cases, while 171 cases of embezzlement and 169 sexual offence cases were reported.

Robbery accounted for 101 cases, while 37 cases involving counterfeit and forgery were recorded. The statistics list one cheque-bounce case.

Authorities continue to focus on public safety issues ranging from drug-related crime and theft to road accidents and violence.

Traffic accidents forming the second-largest category is particularly significant given the increasing number of vehicles and the concentration of road traffic in the Greater Malé region. Police have repeatedly conducted road-safety operations and enforcement campaigns targeting dangerous driving and other traffic violations.

Drug-related cases also remain a prominent component of police work. The government has been pursuing measures aimed at strengthening drug prevention, enforcement and rehabilitation, with drug abuse continuing to be treated as a major social and public-safety concern.
