Customs Seizes 11.75kg Cannabis

Maldives Customs Service has seized 11.75 kilograms of suspected cannabis that was allegedly being smuggled into the Maldives through courier services.

The seizure was made on September 7, 2026, at Velana International Airport (VIA) during the inspection of two courier packages imported into the country, according to Customs.

Customs officers reportedly identified suspicious characteristics in the packages and conducted a detailed examination. The inspection resulted in the discovery of substances suspected to be narcotics.

The substances subsequently tested positive for cannabis during an initial screening, with Customs confirming the total weight of the seized material at 11,750 grams.

The seizure highlights the continued efforts by Customs authorities to prevent the illegal importation of narcotics through international cargo and courier channels.

Authorities routinely inspect incoming consignments at Velana International Airport as part of measures to detect and intercept prohibited goods before they enter the country.

The latest seizure adds to ongoing drug-interdiction efforts at the Maldives’ main international gateway, where Customs works to identify suspicious consignments and prevent the smuggling of controlled substances into the country.
