Vice President Urges Greater Focus on Vocational and Inclusive Education

Vice President has called for greater focus on vocational education and inclusive learning as part of efforts to prepare Maldivian students for future employment and changing social and economic needs.

Speaking at the opening of the eighth International Teachers’ Conference at Shaheed Ali School, the Vice President said the country’s education system must provide opportunities for students with different abilities, interests and aspirations.

The Vice President said technical and vocational skills are essential to developing the workforce needed to support national industries, promote innovation and strengthen the resilience of the economy.

He also highlighted the importance of ensuring that students who have different learning needs or come from different backgrounds are given the necessary support within the education system.

According to the Vice President, the role of teachers remains particularly important as technology and artificial intelligence become increasingly integrated into education.

While acknowledging the benefits of modern technology in improving teaching and learning, he said technology cannot replace teachers and the influence they have on students.

The Vice President said teachers play a key role in shaping students beyond their academic development by helping them develop values, character and confidence.

He also stressed that the success of education reforms depends on the support and leadership of teachers, noting that policies and curriculum changes alone cannot bring meaningful improvements without educators taking an active role.

The Vice President said the National Curriculum is designed not only to help students perform well in examinations, but also to prepare them for life after school.

The eighth International Teachers’ Conference brings together educators to discuss developments in education and ways to strengthen teaching practices in response to the changing needs of students.

During the ceremony, Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr. Ismail Shafeeu presented the Vice President with a commemorative plaque in recognition of his participation in the conference.
