The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is working to expedite the development of water, sewerage and road infrastructure in Hulhumalé Phase 3 to enable land recipients to begin construction on their allocated plots, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said.
The President made the remarks during the fifth episode of the “Rayyithunge Adu” series, after a young recipient of a Hulhumalé Phase 3 land plot raised concerns over the difficulties faced in developing the property.
The individual said construction permits cannot currently be obtained for the allocated plots because water and sewerage infrastructure has yet to be established in Phase 3.
Responding to the concern, the President said HDC is working to accelerate the installation of water and sewerage systems in the area, together with road construction. The infrastructure works are expected to facilitate the development of the plots and allow recipients to proceed with construction of their homes.
The land recipient also raised concerns over access to housing finance, particularly for those who are unable to provide the required equity when applying for housing loans. The individual further highlighted difficulties in mortgaging properties that have not yet been developed.
The President said the government is working to establish a system that would facilitate equity payments for housing projects.
He described the issue as a significant concern, particularly for residents in the Malé region, while noting that developing a comprehensive solution would take time due to the substantial funding required.
Hulhumalé Phase 3 is among the areas being developed to expand housing opportunities in the Greater Malé region, where limited land availability and high housing demand have increased the need for new residential developments.
With the provision of essential infrastructure, plot recipients are expected to be in a better position to move ahead with construction and development of their allocated properties.
