The Maldives Police Service has been using speed cameras to detect speeding vehicles on the Sinamalé Bridge and send text-message warnings to registered vehicle owners.
The system identifies vehicles exceeding the speed limit and sends SMS notifications detailing the violation, including the speed recorded by the cameras. Police introduced the initiative in October 2023 to improve road safety and address dangerous driving on the bridge.
However, in September 2024, police said amendments to existing laws were needed before fines could be issued automatically through the system, as the registered vehicle owner may not have been driving at the time of the offence.
