Abdul Raheem says second term for Muizzu essential to sustain Maldives’ development

PNC Chairperson and Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has said securing a second term for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is essential to sustain the Maldives’ development and ensure continuity in the government’s long-term national projects.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the PNC Congress, Abdul Raheem said the country’s development and progress are closely linked to political stability and continued leadership, stressing that major national goals require sufficient time to be fully realised.

He said the PNC’s objective must therefore be to secure a stronger victory for President Muizzu in the 2028 presidential election than the party achieved in 2023.

According to Abdul Raheem, the Maldives needs a leader to remain in office for at least 10 years to effectively implement a long-term development vision. He said giving President Muizzu a second term would provide the opportunity to continue the work already initiated by his administration.

Abdul Raheem said the PNC’s broader vision is to build a “Maldives for Maldivians” where citizens can live safely, achieve greater self-reliance and where national decisions remain firmly in Maldivian hands.

He said continued political stability is necessary to advance development while strengthening national sovereignty and reducing dependence on external parties.

“The work of the PNC has only just begun,” Abdul Raheem said, calling on members to conclude the congress with a firm resolve to secure a second term for President Muizzu.

He also stressed that political parties have a responsibility to govern when entrusted with power and hold governments accountable when in opposition, describing the PNC’s current role as part of a longer-term mission for national development.

Abdul Raheem further said the PNC’s vision for the Maldives includes peace, justice and stability while preserving the country’s Islamic identity.

His remarks come as the PNC holds its four-day national congress, where the party is strengthening its organisational structure and preparing for its next phase.

The amendments have introduced dedicated structures for religious scholars, women, youth and senior citizens, reflecting the party’s expanded organisational framework.

Abdul Raheem’s address placed continuity of leadership and development at the centre of the PNC’s political agenda, presenting the 2028 election as an opportunity to continue the government’s ongoing development programme and long-term vision for the Maldives.
