China has donated 880 solar-powered streetlights to the Maldives under a grant assistance programme to support renewable energy and sustainable development across local islands.
The handover agreement was signed on Tuesday by Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib and Chinese Ambassador Kong Xianhua.
The donation falls under the China Solar Lights Maldives project and is expected to expand solar streetlight installations to more islands. Similar lights donated earlier have already been installed on three islands.
Ambassador Kong said the decision to donate the streetlights followed a meeting between President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and China’s President last year.
The project supports the government’s efforts to increase renewable energy use and reduce reliance on conventional electricity sources.
