President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has issued a decree removing Savaaheli from Addu City’s administrative jurisdiction to support tourism development.
The amendment was made through Decree No. 13/2026 under the Decentralisation Act, which gives the President authority to determine the jurisdictions of City and Island Councils.
The President’s Office said a revised administrative map has been published in the Government Gazette following the change.
No further details were provided on how the change will be implemented or what tourism projects are planned for Savaaheli.
The move comes as part of the government’s efforts to expand tourism in the southern atolls. Addu has been identified as a key destination for new tourism investment, while Savaaheli has previously been earmarked for tourism development.
