Maldives condemns Houthi attack on Saudi vessel 

The Maldivian government has strongly condemned the Houthi group’s attack on a Saudi vessel sailing through the Red Sea, describing it as a serious threat to international navigation and regional stability.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the government said the attack poses a grave risk to the freedom, safety and security of international maritime navigation and represents a dangerous escalation in one of the world’s most critical shipping corridors.

The government noted that the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait serve as a vital global energy supply route, warning that continued attacks in the area could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy, energy security and regional stability.

The Maldives also called on the international community to ensure the implementation of relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 2216 and 2722, as well as international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Reaffirming its support for Saudi Arabia, the Maldives expressed solidarity with the Saudi government and its people, while backing all measures undertaken by the Kingdom to safeguard its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
