China Set to Launch Major Maldives Infrastructure Projects by Early 2027

China is preparing to begin physical work on several major infrastructure projects in the Maldives by the end of this year or early next year, including road redevelopment in Malé and Vilimalé and construction of the China-Maldives Friendship Hospital in Vilimalé.

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Wang Lixin announced the expected timeline while speaking at a ceremony commemorating the 77th National Day of the People’s Republic of China, highlighting China’s continued support for the Maldives’ development.

The China-Maldives Friendship Hospital in Vilimalé is currently in the bidding phase, while the redevelopment of roads in Malé and Vilimalé has reached the design stage. According to the ambassador, physical work on the projects is expected to begin during the final quarter of this year or early 2027.

The projects form part of China’s continued development assistance to the Maldives, with cooperation covering key areas including infrastructure, healthcare, environmental protection and public facilities.

Ambassador Wang also said plans to construct island council buildings are progressing, with project approvals expected by the end of this year.

China has also continued supporting environmental initiatives in the Maldives. The ambassador highlighted the successful implementation of a coconut tree pest control project in Hanimaadhoo, aimed at protecting coconut trees and supporting agricultural sustainability.

The upcoming infrastructure projects are expected to further expand development cooperation between the Maldives and China, particularly in improving urban infrastructure and strengthening healthcare facilities.

Ambassador Wang reaffirmed that China is preparing to move the Malé and Vilimalé road redevelopment projects and the Vilimalé hospital project into the construction stage, further strengthening the longstanding development partnership between the two countries.
