Six members of the Parole Board have been dismissed following the controversial decision to release convicted drug trafficker Abdulla Ibrahim, known as “Abucha,” on parole.
Home Minister Ali Ihusaan said the six members who voted for Abucha’s release were removed after a government review found that the board had miscalculated his parole eligibility and failed to properly apply the legal requirements.
However, Ihusaan said the review found no evidence that the members acted deliberately or with malicious intent, so their names will not be made public.
Abucha’s parole has since been revoked and he was returned to prison.
The government has also suspended the Parole Board’s work and plans to amend the Prisons and Parole Act, which has been in place since 2013.
