The government is moving to expand opportunities for young Maldivians in e-sports, with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirming his administration’s commitment to developing the sector and confirming that efforts are underway to establish dedicated e-sports facilities in Malé.
Speaking during the fourth episode of the “Rayyithunge Adu” (Voice of the People) programme, President Muizzu acknowledged the growing number of young people actively involved in e-sports and stressed the need to give greater attention to the rapidly developing field.
The issue was raised by a young e-sports participant who highlighted the growing achievements of Maldivian youth in the industry while noting that e-sports currently does not have a dedicated category in the national sports awards.
The participant called for greater official recognition of e-sports, noting that the absence of a formal category has made it difficult to recognize the achievements of young Maldivians competing in the field.
Responding to the concern, President Muizzu acknowledged the importance of addressing the issue, noting that a significant number of young people are now actively engaged in e-sports.
The President’s response comes as his administration has already outlined plans to develop dedicated infrastructure for e-sports and youth recreation.
In his Presidential Address earlier this year, President Muizzu announced plans to establish an e-sports centre and arcade in Malé, alongside an activities complex designed specifically for children. The President confirmed during the programme that the government is currently seeking developers to begin work on the planned facilities.
The planned e-sports centre is expected to provide young people with a dedicated space to develop their skills and participate in the growing industry, while the wider recreational facilities are intended to create additional opportunities for children and youth to engage in productive activities.
During the programme, the young participant also welcomed the administration’s focus on youth and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to directly raise concerns with the President.
The government’s plans signal growing recognition of e-sports as an emerging area of youth participation, while the proposed facilities could provide a stronger foundation for Maldivian players to develop their skills and gain greater opportunities to compete and succeed at national and international levels.
“Rayyithunge Adu” provides members of the public with an opportunity to meet directly with the President and raise concerns, suggestions and issues requiring government attention.
