MTCC to Begin Major Harbour and Coastal Projects Across Four Islands

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded major infrastructure projects on four islands, with works ranging from coastal protection and harbour upgrades to land reclamation for fisheries facilities.

The projects will be carried out in B. Kihadhoo, HA. Muraidhoo, Dh. Bandidhoo and HA. Kelaa under agreements signed with the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development.

In Kihadhoo, MTCC will undertake a major coastal protection project involving a 240-metre rock boulder revetment, a 380-metre rock boulder breakwater and 17,300 cubic metres of sand backfilling. The project is expected to be completed within 360 days.

Muraidhoo will receive a 139-metre rock boulder revetment and a 56-metre groyne as part of its coastal protection works.

In Bandidhoo, the focus will be on improving the island’s harbour and marine access. MTCC will dredge the harbour to a depth of 3.5 metres and the entrance channel to four metres. A 170-metre concrete jetty, two metres wide, will also be constructed. The works have a 210-day completion period.

The largest project among the four is planned for HA. Kelaa, where harbour development will be combined with land reclamation to facilitate fisheries infrastructure.

The Kelaa project will involve reclaiming 8.56 hectares of land, dredging the harbour and channel, and constructing a 266-metre quay wall. Six mooring buoys and a sand-filled breakwater will also be installed.

The scope further includes 692 metres of rock revetment, 620 metres of geobag revetment, two navigation lights and 45 streetlights. Pavement works, a concrete jetty and a bridge are also included in the project, which has a 600-day completion period.

The agreements were signed by State Minister Ismail Hameed on behalf of the Ministry and MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee on behalf of the company.

The projects are expected to improve harbour access and coastal protection in the respective islands, while the Kelaa development will create additional land and infrastructure specifically for fisheries-related activities.
