Government to skip Independence Day reception again to reduce state spending

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided that the official reception traditionally held to mark Maldives’ Independence Day will not be conducted this year, in line with the Government’s cost-cutting measures.

The decision follows a similar arrangement made last year, when the Independence Day reception was also not held as the administration sought to reduce state expenses.

The Government stated that the move is part of broader efforts to manage public spending while ensuring that national events continue in a more cost-conscious manner.

The official Independence Day ceremony will proceed as scheduled on July 26 at 9:00 a.m. at the Maldives Centre for Social Education. During the ceremony, President Dr Muizzu will deliver an address to the nation.

Maldives celebrates Independence Day every year on July 26, commemorating the country’s independence from British protection in 1965. The day is marked with official ceremonies, cultural programmes, and national celebrations across the country. Traditionally, the State has hosted an official reception attended by government officials, foreign diplomats, and other invited guests as part of the celebrations.
