More than MVR 3 million has been contributed to the Maldives Waqf Fund through the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) so far this year, reflecting growing public participation in efforts to strengthen the country’s Islamic endowment system.
Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said special links have been established on MIRA’s online platform to make it easier for individuals and businesses to contribute to the Waqf Fund and make charitable donations.
Speaking on the development of the fund, Shaheem highlighted the strong public response to the initiative, noting that the increased contributions demonstrate growing interest in supporting Islamic affairs through Waqf.
The Minister said funds received through the Waqf Fund are being utilized in accordance with its Trust Statement. He assured that expenditures from the fund would be carried out strictly in line with the regulations governing the Waqf Fund.
Waqf, an Islamic endowment system in which assets or funds are dedicated for charitable or religious purposes, has been identified by the government as an important mechanism for creating sustainable financing for Islamic initiatives in the Maldives.
The administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has placed emphasis on expanding the Waqf economy as part of efforts to establish sustainable sources of funding for religious activities. Several Waqf-related building projects have already commenced in different parts of the country.
The government intends to utilize the Waqf Fund to support the expansion of Islamic Da’wah, renovation and development of mosques, and other religious and community initiatives.
The ability to contribute through MIRA’s online platform is expected to make Waqf contributions more accessible, allowing individuals to support these initiatives through a centralized digital payment system.
