Chinese Ambassador Highlights Maldives’ History After Utheem Visit

Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives Kong Xianhua has once again shared his appreciation for Maldivian history and culture, following his visit to HA. Utheem for National Day commemorations.

In a post on X, Ambassador Kong said a shared understanding of history helps bind a nation together, quoting Marcus Garvey’s famous observation that a people without knowledge of their history, origins and culture are like “a tree without roots.”

“History education passes down collective memory, forges national identity and nurtures shared consensus among generations,” he wrote.

“This visit to Utheem has been truly rewarding. Once again, I wish our Maldivian friends a happy National Day. Good night, Maldives.”

Kong has developed a reputation for regularly sharing his experiences in the Maldives, often posting about the country’s islands, people, nature, culture and history.

Since arriving in the Maldives in April 2025, his frequent “Good morning, Maldives” posts have attracted considerable attention from Maldivians. In an interview with ‘Maldives Independent’, he said he enjoys sharing what he sees in the country with people around the world and highlighted Maldivian people, history, culture and natural beauty among the things that have impressed him most.

His interest in the country’s island communities has also taken him beyond Malé. In June, Kong published an article about his visit to Th. Kinbidhoo, describing how the island’s traditions, community spirit and history left a lasting impression on him.

Kong presented his credentials to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in May 2025. Maldives and China established diplomatic relations in 1972, and the two countries have continued to strengthen cooperation across development, tourism, education and other areas.

His latest message from Utheem adds another personal reflection to his growing collection of posts celebrating the Maldives, this time focusing on the importance of preserving and understanding the country’s history and heritage.
