President Muizzu:Youth Are Key to Maldives’ Future 

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering young Maldivians, describing the country’s youth as a key force in shaping the Maldives’ future.

In a message marking International Youth Day, observed annually on 12 August, President Muizzu highlighted this year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” noting that young people may experience different realities depending on their islands, communities and backgrounds, but share common aspirations for quality education, meaningful opportunities, dignity and a better future.

The President noted that young people account for nearly 45 per cent of the Maldives’ population, underscoring their importance to the country’s social and economic development.

He praised Maldivian youth for their achievements in fields including education, science, sports and faith, saying their accomplishments demonstrate the potential of the younger generation.

President Muizzu also highlighted Government efforts to expand higher education and vocational training opportunities across the atolls. Among the initiatives he cited were the National Apprenticeship Programme and National Service Programme, which aim to strengthen pathways from education and training into employment.

He said the Government remains committed to creating an environment where young people can develop their skills and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The President also praised the energy, resilience and determination of Maldivian youth, expressing confidence that their ideas, voices and ambitions will help steer the country towards lasting prosperity, resilience and sustainable development.

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also marked the occasion through a post on X, emphasising the importance of ensuring equal opportunities for young people regardless of their background or home island.

She said every young person’s dreams are equally valuable and called for collective efforts to build a Maldives where circumstances do not limit young people’s ability to pursue their ambitions.

International Youth Day is observed each year on 12 August to raise awareness of challenges affecting young people and recognise their contributions as important partners in development.
