MPL Consults Stakeholders on Malé Port Relocation

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has held a stakeholder consultation with shipping agents, airline agents and freight forwarders to discuss the ongoing project to relocate the Malé Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi.

The consultation, held at Hotel Jen, is part of a series of stakeholder engagements initiated by MPL to gather technical input and feedback from industry professionals ahead of the relocation of port operations.

Discussions focused on potential operational challenges that may arise following the relocation, as well as ways to improve services such as sea-to-air cargo transfers. Participants shared their expertise and recommendations on streamlining port operations and ensuring efficient and seamless service delivery.

According to MPL, the Thilafushi Port is scheduled to commence operations on 11 November 2027. The new port is expected to operate around the clock, providing uninterrupted services and contributing to increased efficiency in the Maldives’ trade and logistics sector.

The development of the Thilafushi port is a key economic pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and is intended to provide a long-term solution to congestion at the existing Malé Commercial Harbour.

The new facility is envisioned as a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose port developed to international standards and equipped with modern technology and infrastructure.

MPL said consultations have already been held with government ministries, institutions and members of the business community. The company added that it will continue engaging with other relevant stakeholders to gather further feedback as the project progresses.
