MTCC Commissions Pump Station at Masveringe Park to Tackle Street Flooding

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commissioned Pump Station 2 at Masveringe Park as part of efforts to address the long-standing issue of street flooding in Malé during periods of heavy rainfall.

MTCC announced on X that its team successfully commissioned the pump station on August 13, marking another milestone in the Boduthakurufaanu Road Development Project – Phase 1.

The company said Pump Station 1, located near the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), is scheduled to be commissioned today, August 15.

The two pump stations are designed to strengthen stormwater management along the project area and help reduce flooding caused by seasonal heavy rainfall.

The installation of dedicated pumping infrastructure is expected to improve the drainage capacity of the area by enabling accumulated stormwater to be removed more effectively, particularly during periods of intense rain when existing drainage systems can become overwhelmed.

Street flooding has been a recurring challenge in Malé, with heavy rainfall often resulting in water accumulating on major roads and low-lying areas. The issue can disrupt traffic, affect businesses and homes, and create difficulties for pedestrians and motorists.

The Boduthakurufaanu Road Development Project is part of ongoing efforts to improve road infrastructure and stormwater management in the capital. The project incorporates drainage and other infrastructure improvements alongside road development works.

MTCC said the commissioning of the pump stations represents progress toward providing a more effective and sustainable solution to stormwater management in the area.

The company’s post highlighted the work of its project team and said the new facilities will help address one of the city’s long-standing infrastructure challenges.
