Construction Begins on 50 Housing Units in AA. Ukulhas

Physical construction has officially commenced on a project to develop 50 housing units in AA. Ukulhas, marking a key step in the government’s efforts to address housing needs on the island.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu attended a ceremony on Wednesday to mark the start of construction. The event was also attended by Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib, senior officials from the ministry, and Ibrahim Azeem, Manager of the project’s contractor, Altec Maldives.

The contract for the housing project was awarded to Altec Maldives on 6 November 2025. Under the agreement, the company is required to complete the project within 600 days.

The development will deliver 50 three-bedroom housing units for residents of Ukulhas, with the project aimed at easing the island’s housing shortage.

The project forms part of the government’s nationwide housing programme, which seeks to increase access to affordable housing across the Maldives. During President Muizzu’s visit to Ukulhas last year, residents and local council members highlighted the growing demand for additional housing as one of the island’s most pressing development priorities. The commencement of construction follows those discussions and represents progress toward addressing the issue.
