New MNDF Maritime Rescue Centre Opens in Vilimalé

The new Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) has been inaugurated in Vilimalé, marking a major boost to the country's maritime search and rescue capabilities.

The facility serves as the national coordination centre for maritime and aeronautical search and rescue operations within the Maldives' designated search and rescue regions. It includes a modern operations room, classrooms and an auditorium to support emergency response and training.

The project was developed by the Government of Maldives, with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) coordinating its implementation. The Government of Australia provided equipment and operational systems for the centre.

Construction began in 2022 but was delayed before being prioritised for completion under the current administration as part of efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Maldives Coast Guard.

The inauguration ceremony included a tour of the new facility and a commemorative tree planting, attended by senior government officials, diplomats and MNDF officers.
