President Muizzu Vows to Establish Framework to Prevent Laws Contrary to Islam

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to submit a proposal to the People’s Majlis to establish a robust mechanism ensuring that no laws contrary to Islamic principles are enacted in the Maldives.

The President made the remarks today while delivering the keynote address as the guest of honor at the official National Day ceremony held in HA. Utheemu, emphasizing that Islam remains central to the Maldives’ independence, sovereignty and national identity.

President Muizzu noted that the Constitution already stipulates that no law contrary to the tenets of Islam may be enacted. However, he said a comprehensive mechanism to ensure compliance with this constitutional provision has yet to be established.

He said his administration will introduce a systematic framework during the third session of the People’s Majlis this year to ensure that the commitment is upheld through established procedures.

The President warned that implementing policies and practices contrary to Islamic values could undermine the country’s independence and sovereignty, stressing the importance of safeguarding both religious and national sovereignty.

Addressing the importance of social values, President Muizzu said morality and discipline are fundamental to nation-building and called on Maldivians to strengthen respect, compassion and civility in their daily lives.

He urged citizens to demonstrate these values in public spaces, workplaces and within their communities, describing them as essential to reviving and strengthening the national spirit.

The National Day ceremony also featured the conferring of the country’s highest State Dignity, the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddeen (Nishan Dhiyamigili Sharafuge Izzaiy), on Al-Usthadh Kashima Ahmed Shakir.

President Muizzu described Shakir as a “pioneer of history,” recognizing his more than 41 years of service to the state and his contributions to Maldivian history, language and literature. He also extended congratulations to recipients of the National Award of Honor and the National Award of Recognition.

Speaking from Utheemu, the birthplace of national hero Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, President Muizzu said National Day is an occasion to honor the country’s historic struggle for independence.

He paid tribute to the people of Boduthiladhunmathi and expressed the nation’s enduring love and respect for the three Utheemu brothers and all those who fought against Portuguese rule to defend Maldivian sovereignty and independence.

The ceremony was attended by Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Cabinet ministers and other senior government officials and dignitaries.

President Muizzu concluded his address with a prayer for the Maldives to remain a peaceful and happy sanctuary for all Maldivians.
