Utheemu’s Historic Legacy Honoured with New Boduthakurufaanu Dhoroashi

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated the Boduthakurufaanu Handhaanee Dhoroashi in HA. Utheemu, a landmark structure developed as part of a national initiative to preserve the legacy of national hero Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al Auzam.

The President unveiled the Dhoroashi during his visit to Utheemu for National Day commemorations. President Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed are scheduled to participate in a series of activities on the island marking the occasion.

The inauguration was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef, Speaker of the People’s Majlis Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Chief Justice Uz Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, Baarashu Constituency MP Ibrahim Shujaau and members of the Cabinet.

Distinguished individuals who have rendered long years of service to the state, foreign diplomats and members of the public also attended the ceremony.

The Boduthakurufaanu Handhaanee Dhoroashi has been designed to commemorate the historic struggle led by Boduthakurufaanu and symbolize the sacrifices made in defence of Maldivian independence and sovereignty.

The structure features six principal pillars inspired by the columns traditionally found in ancient Maldivian mosques. Each pillar represents one of the six heroes who fought for the freedom and sovereignty of the Maldivian people.

The Dhoroashi forms part of a dedicated national initiative in Haa Alif Atoll aimed at preserving the history, legacy and memory of Ghazi Bandaaraain, Utheemu Mohamed Thakurufaanu.

The initiative seeks to strengthen Maldivian national identity and cultural heritage while ensuring that the history associated with Utheemu and Thakurufaanu’s struggle is preserved and passed on to future generations.

The initiative also aims to integrate the preservation of this heritage with the tourism sector, allowing visitors to learn about the Maldives’ history while supporting efforts to safeguard important national heritage sites.

The project to develop the Boduthakurufaanu Handhaanee Dhoroashi was formally launched during President Muizzu’s previous visit to Haa Alif Atoll.

The inauguration comes as the Maldives commemorates National Day, with Utheemu serving as a focal point for remembering the historic resistance against Portuguese colonial rule and the heroes who fought to protect the nation’s independence and sovereignty.
