The Maldives Police Service has outlined the preliminary sequence of events in the Hulhumalé road accident that claimed the life of a nine-year-old child last week.
The accident occurred at around 9:04pm on August 29 near Vinares Tower 7 on Hithigas Magu in Hulhumalé Phase 2.
According to police, video footage from the area and findings from the accident scene indicate that the incident began when the driver of a car parked on the side of the road attempted to enter the vehicle.
At that moment, a motorcycle attempting to overtake the parked car collided with the individual, causing the motorcycle to fall into the right lane.
Police said it is suspected that a second car travelling in the right lane was unable to stop in time and subsequently struck or ran over the nine-year-old child after the child fell from the motorcycle.
The police said forensic examinations are being conducted to verify the sequence of events and establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
The child succumbed to the injuries in the early hours of September 1 while receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Following the accident, police towed all three vehicles involved and suspended the driving licences of the three individuals involved.
Police also found that the driver of the parked car had been operating the vehicle despite his licence already being suspended. He was fined and further regulatory action was taken against him.
The police statement comes as authorities continue efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
