President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said increasing local food production and reducing reliance on imports are essential to the Maldives’ national sovereignty.
In a message marking Farmers’ Day, Muizzu highlighted farmers’ role in strengthening food security and stabilising the economy, particularly amid global food price increases and international travel disruptions.
He said expanding agriculture could also help generate foreign exchange and create more jobs across the islands.
The President added that the government aims to increase local production of goods currently imported and improve farmers’ profitability through modern technology.
He also extended greetings to Maldivian farmers, their families and others working in the agricultural sector.
