First Lady Sajidha Highlights Grandparents’ Role on National Grandparents Day

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has extended greetings and congratulations to grandparents across the Maldives, describing becoming a grandparent as a unique and joyful milestone and an invaluable blessing for families.

In a message shared on X on Tuesday, the first lady wished all Maldivian grandparents lasting health, happiness and prosperity, while highlighting the special place grandparents hold within families.

Her message comes on National Grandparents Day, observed annually in the Maldives on September 1. The day was formally introduced in 2020 to recognise and honour the contributions of grandparents and senior citizens to families and society.

Grandparents traditionally play an important role in Maldivian family life, often contributing to childcare, passing down family traditions and values, and maintaining close bonds between generations. The occasion also provides an opportunity to recognise the experience, guidance and support older generations provide to younger family members.

First Lady Sajidha has previously highlighted the importance of grandparents in strengthening family bonds and fostering a compassionate society. Her message this year similarly places the focus on the joy of becoming a grandparent and the lasting value of grandparents within families.
