MACL opens new passenger rest area at VIA

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has opened a new passenger rest and service area at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport, adding new facilities aimed at improving comfort and convenience for departing passengers.

The newly developed space includes around 750 square metres of additional seating on the terminal’s first floor, providing travellers with more options to relax while waiting for their flights.

The expansion also features a dedicated children’s play area spanning 136 square metres. Designed with families in mind, the facility includes multi-level play platforms, woven mesh tunnels, rope and ring climbing features, and a ball pit, offering a safer and more engaging environment for young passengers.

As part of the new development, Bank of Maldives has opened a banking service facility within the area. The outlet provides foreign exchange services and US dollar issuance services for Maldivian customers.

Terminal 1 was officially inaugurated on 26 July 2025 to coincide with the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations, replacing the airport’s former international terminal, which had been in operation since 1981. The modern facility was built to accommodate up to 7.5 million passengers annually and features 47 check-in counters, self-service kiosks, 12 aerobridges and six boarding gates, significantly increasing the airport’s passenger handling capacity.

MACL said the opening of the new passenger rest and service area marks another milestone in the ongoing development of Terminal 1, reflecting the company’s commitment to providing modern, inclusive and passenger-focused facilities as Velana International Airport continues to strengthen its role as the country’s main international gateway.
