MET Office Reissues Nationwide White Alert Over Swell Wave Surges

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has reissued a nationwide white alert, warning of swell wave surges that could affect parts of the country during high tide.

The alert came into effect at 11:30 a.m. today and will remain in force until 3:30 p.m. It follows a similar nationwide white alert issued by the MET Office on Tuesday as weather conditions remain unsettled across the Maldives.

According to the forecast, south-easterly to southerly winds are expected over the southern atolls, while the rest of the country will experience south-westerly to westerly winds, with wind speeds ranging from 5 to 15 mph across the country.

Sea conditions are expected to remain slight to moderate, becoming moderately rough during squalls, with wave heights of 2 to 4 feet.

The MET Office also warned that swell wave surges may affect some islands during high tide and has advised the public to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying coastal areas and when travelling by sea, while the alert remains in effect.
