Velana International Airport (VIA) has recorded the highest monthly outbound transshipment cargo volume in its history, marking another major milestone in the Maldives’ growing role as a regional logistics hub.
According to VIA, outbound transshipment cargo handled through its Sea-to-Air and Air-to-Air operations exceeded 2,000 tonnes in July 2026, making it the first time the airport has surpassed the 2,000-tonne mark within a single month. The figure represents the highest monthly transshipment volume ever recorded at the airport.
Sea-to-Air operations also achieved a record performance during the month. VIA reported that 621 tonnes of cargo were uplifted through the service in July, the highest monthly volume since Sea-to-Air transshipment operations began.
The airport said the achievement reflects the continued expansion of its transshipment business and reinforces VIA’s position as a strategic multimodal logistics hub in the Indian Ocean, connecting cargo efficiently between major markets across Asia, Europe and other regions.
The latest milestone builds on the steady growth of VIA’s cargo operations. Earlier this year, the airport reported that the majority of Sea-to-Air cargo handled through its facilities originated from Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka, with shipments primarily consisting of ready-made garments destined for European markets. VIA also recently expanded its network by welcoming its first-ever Sea-to-Air cargo shipment from Cambodia, broadening its regional cargo connectivity.
The airport has been actively developing its cargo and logistics capabilities as part of broader efforts to position the Maldives as a key transshipment gateway in the Indian Ocean. The continued increase in cargo volumes is expected to further enhance the country’s role in regional trade and supply chain connectivity.
