Marine Science Symposium Returns With 47 Studies

The Maldives Marine Research Institute (MMRI) is set to host the 6th edition of the Maldives Marine Science Symposium in August 2026.

Organized by MMRI in collaboration with the Maldives National University (MNU), the symposium will take place from August 4th to 5th, 2026, at the MNU Central Auditorium. The opening ceremony will be graced by the Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam.

The primary objective of this symposium is to share ongoing research and findings regarding the Maldives’ marine resources and biodiversity with the public. Furthermore, it aims to facilitate the exchange of information among professionals in the field and foster the advancement of marine science in the Maldives. As a biennial event held since 2016, this symposium remains the only dedicated platform of its kind in the country, offering an invaluable opportunity for stakeholders in the marine sector.

A total of 47 research papers are scheduled to be presented at this year’s symposium, comprising 32 oral presentations and 15 poster presentations. The research is categorized into five key thematic areas:

Coral Reefs, Restoration, and Climate Change

Fisheries, Governance, and Society

Sea Turtles: Ecology, Health, and Conservation

Sharks, Rays, and Other Marine Megafauna

Coastal Ecosystems and Seabirds

The symposium will bring together various NGOs and universities engaged in Maldivian marine research, providing a forum to showcase their findings and engage in professional discourse.
