Japan has granted USD 1.02 million to the Maldives to continue the JDS scholarship programme, supporting higher education opportunities for Maldivian students in Japan.
The Government of Japan has provided a grant of 152 million Japanese Yen (approximately USD 1.02 million) to the Maldives to continue scholarship opportunities for Maldivian students under the Japanese Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).
The Exchange of Notes for the grant assistance was signed on Wednesday at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Sheryna Abdul Samad and Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives Ishigami Rumiko.
Launched in 2020, the JDS programme provides opportunities for Maldivians to pursue master’s degree programmes at leading universities in Japan, with the aim of strengthening the country’s human resource capacity and supporting long-term socioeconomic development.
So far, 17 Maldivian students have graduated through the programme, while nine students are currently studying in Japan.
The signing ceremony was attended by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development, Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, Civil Service Commission, Embassy of Japan, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
