Maldives Signs MoU with Sri Lankan Hospital to Provide Clinical Internships for Medical Graduates

The Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Suwasevana Hospital of Sri Lanka on Tuesday to establish a clinical internship programme for Maldivian medical graduates.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at Moomina Maalam, Roashanee Building. Minister of State for Health, Family and Welfare Khadeeja Abdul Samad Abdulla signed the MoU on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Suwasevana Hospital Director Bandula Egodage signed on behalf of the hospital.

Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali, senior officials from the ministry, representatives of Suwasevana Hospital and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs attended the ceremony.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Geela highlighted the importance of investing in the development of a competent and resilient healthcare workforce. She said the partnership would expand opportunities for Maldivian medical graduates to receive structured clinical training and practical experience, strengthening their professional competencies and supporting their career development.

Under the MoU, Suwasevana Hospital will provide one-year clinical internship opportunities for Maldivian MBBS graduates, with up to 20 placements available annually.

The programme will provide graduates with practical clinical experience in a supervised hospital environment, helping them develop their skills and prepare for independent medical practice.

The ministry said the agreement will strengthen cooperation with Suwasevana Hospital in developing skilled medical professionals and contribute to strengthening medical education and capacity building in the Maldives.

The partnership also reflects the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, particularly in healthcare and professional development.
