President reaffirms commitment to protecting Maldives’ sovereignty and independence

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to protecting the Maldives' sovereignty, territorial integrity and independent decision-making.

Speaking at the official ceremony marking the Maldives' 61st Independence Day, President Muizzu said true independence goes beyond political freedom and includes the ability of a nation to make its own decisions without external influence.

He said his administration remains committed to reclaiming maritime territory that he said was lost under the previous government and announced plans for legislative reforms to further strengthen national independence and the Maldives' position in international organisations.

Calling the country "the Maldivians' Maldives," President Muizzu said Maldivian policies must always take precedence. He also reiterated that while the Maldives maintains relations with countries around the world, his government will not establish relations with Israel, citing its actions against the Palestinian people.

The President said protecting national sovereignty and the interests of Maldivians will remain at the centre of his administration's policies.
