President Muizzu Meets Ukulhas Stakeholders to Discuss Island Development Priorities

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu met with the AA. Ukulhas Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and heads of local institutions on Wednesday to discuss key priorities for the island’s development.

The meeting was held at the Ukulhas Convention Centre as part of the President’s visit to the island.

During the discussions, council members outlined several pressing needs, including the construction of additional housing units to address the island’s housing shortage. They also called for further land reclamation adjacent to the existing reclaimed area, along with the development of essential infrastructure such as water, sewerage, electricity, and road networks on the reclaimed land.

The council also highlighted challenges related to land allocation, noting that the lack of available space is limiting plans to expand the island’s powerhouse. Other requests included transferring waste management operations to Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) and introducing measures to ensure more affordable fuel prices for residents.

President Muizzu assured those present that the concerns raised would receive due consideration. Cabinet ministers attending the meeting also briefed participants on the progress of ongoing development projects in Ukulhas.

The meeting comes as the government advances several initiatives on the island, including the recently commenced construction of 50 three-bedroom housing units, a project aimed at easing the housing shortage and improving living conditions for residents.
