WAMCO Says Male’ City Council Owes MVR 116.4 Million in Unpaid Waste Management Fees

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has revealed that the Malé City Council owes the company MVR 116.4 million in outstanding payments for waste management services provided since 2024.

WAMCO disclosed the figure in a statement issued Thursday night in response to media reports that the Malé City Council is considering filing a case with the Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) over waste management services provided by the corporation.

The state-owned waste management company said it has always welcomed the registration of Malé City Council offices as customers and remains committed to providing its services in accordance with established procedures.

However, WAMCO said the Council has failed to settle MVR 116.4 million in outstanding payments accumulated since 2024.

According to WAMCO, the failure to settle the required fees has affected the standard administrative procedures necessary for customer registration.

The company said delayed payments from major clients have been a primary factor contributing to its current financial difficulties. WAMCO added that the financial constraints have also resulted in delays in making employee pension contributions.

WAMCO further stated that, under its standard policy, it reserves the right to suspend services to customers whose payments remain overdue for more than two months.

The company said it has made continuous efforts over the past two years to recover the outstanding amount from the Malé City Council.

WAMCO also said a payment schedule had previously been agreed upon to facilitate repayment of the debt. However, according to the company, the Council has failed to comply with the agreed payment schedule.

The disclosure comes amid ongoing discussions over waste management services in Malé and the financial obligations between the City Council and WAMCO.
