The government has decided to take legal and administrative action against individuals whose registered mobile SIM cards are found to have been smuggled into correctional facilities.
The decision was made during the Cabinet meeting held on Sunday as part of measures to strengthen security and tighten regulations governing the issuance and use of mobile SIM cards.
The Cabinet also decided to introduce additional restrictions on SIM cards issued to unskilled foreign workers. Under the new measures, such workers will be limited to one registered SIM card.
Replacement SIM cards for those that are lost or damaged will only be issued through an established process involving clearance from the Maldives Police Service.
The measures are aimed at strengthening oversight of SIM card registration and preventing registered mobile numbers from being misused or illicitly brought into correctional facilities.
