Maldives Signs MoU with Yunnan University to Advance AI-Based Drug Rehabilitation

The Maldives has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Yunnan University to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and data science in strengthening drug rehabilitation and mental health services.

The agreement, signed yesterday, aims to develop faster and more sustainable approaches to drug treatment and psychological care through modern technology and scientific research.

Under the MoU, the two sides will explore the application of AI in identifying innovative treatment methods and conducting research into drug rehabilitation. The partnership will also facilitate technical assistance and specialized training for Maldivian professionals working in the field, helping to strengthen local expertise and capacity.

The National Drug Agency (NDA) will be the main institution involved in implementing the initiative. The collaboration is expected to support the agency in further developing its treatment framework and introducing more data-driven approaches to rehabilitation.

Through data science, patient information can be analyzed to better understand individual needs and identify treatment and recovery pathways suited to each person, supporting a more personalized approach to rehabilitation.

The government has said the partnership is part of broader efforts to address drug abuse and improve treatment and psychological support in the Maldives.

The collaboration with Yunnan University is expected to strengthen the use of scientific research, technology and specialized expertise in tackling the country’s drug-related challenges while improving the quality and effectiveness of rehabilitation services.
